Poplar wood machines quite well, although the wood may be fuzzy on the surface after milling. Therefore, great care should be taken in milling process. The wood also glues well, dries quickly, has no cracking when nailed or screwed, low distortion but susceptible to warping when drying.

Poplar wood is light in weight, quite soft, has a low tortional and compressive strength, low shock resistance. After drying, the wood has no odor and taste and is not resistant to decay.

Poplar wood is used for joinery, carving, interior trims, toys and kitchen utensils. Poplar wood is especially used for making woodblinds and trap doors in America.
